Police investigating theft at Spanish Fort park; 'first time' something like this has happened at the park

Parking fees being collected during baseball tournament at Spirit Park nabbed by masked assailant

SPANISH FORT, Ala.—The Spanish Fort Police Department is following up on leads related to a Sunday afternoon theft at Spirit Park.

Police Chief David Edgar said a woman was collecting parking fees at the road during the Nations baseball tournament being held at the park. The cash, he said, was being placed in a metal box on a nearby table when an unknown man with his face covered approached her.

"He didn’t say anything. He just grabbed the money and took off running," Edgar said, declining to release the exact amount of cash stolen during the theft.

Investigators did recover some of the money and the box on the side of the road about one-quarter mile from the incident, but a suspect has not yet been arrested, he said.

"It’s the first time I know that (a theft like this) has ever happened at Spirit Park," Edgar said. "We do have some leads that we’re following up on."
