TROY, AL - The Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity chapter at Troy University has been temporarily suspended following a party that resulted in dozens of arrests late Tuesday night.
The fraternity was hosting a university-sanctioned party at a local restaurant when the Alabama Beverage Control Board arrived.
Agents with the ABC say they arrested 60 individuals and have 75 active cases pending following the party at The Pines Restaurant. Among those arrested were 16-year-olds, 17-year-olds and Troy University football and women's basketball players.
The ABC Board said a concerned citizen called police after seeing what they believed to be a large party with minors consuming alcohol.
Lt. Thomas Price of the ABC Board said agents arrived at the party, which he described as "massive" with more than 300 people in attendance. Within minutes, officers began making arrests for underage drinking. Charges ranged from consumption of alcohol by minors to distribution of a controlled substance and second degree possession of marijuana.
Price said the Troy Fire Department had to be called out to the scene because many suspects attempted to leave the scene while the investigation was being conducted. Some had to be removed from the roof of the restaurant by the fire department's ladder truck.
Troy University quoted the number of arrests at 52, but were not aware of the additional 8 suspects transported to the Pike County Jail bringing the total to 60. The names of those arrested is still not available/
Troy Dean of Students Herbert Reeves said the university has dealt with alcohol issues in the past, mostly on an individual basis, but "I cannot tell you the last time...we dealt with something this large scale." Reeves said he's been with Troy University for over 20 years.
University spokesman Clif Lusk confirmed that Troy University police were on duty at the party.
The Troy Police Department deferred all questions to the ABC Board.
Lt. Price said the ABC Board will pursue disciplinary action against the fraternity chapter. He also said The Pines Restaurant could face citations for exceeding fire-code limits and that the Board was working to obtain arrest warrants for the two managers who were on duty at the time.
The restaurant's owner, Sandra Garret, said she was not at work when the party was being held and can't comment specifically on the incident. She says she's rented out her facility to fraternities and sororities in years past and has never had a problem.
Garret assumed her liquor license had been revoked because it's no longer on the wall inside her business. She later confirmed that the license has not been suspended. It was removed by ABC agents for informational purposes. She says she wants to work with the ABC Board and Troy University to resolve the situation. That meeting is set for Friday.
