Lance Cpl. John E. Flowers Jr. was awarded the medal for his heroic achievement in his superior performance of duties while serving as fireteam leader, 2D Battalion, 6th Marines, Regimental Combat Team 1, 1st Marine Division.
In support of Operation Enduring Freedom, Flowers showed great discipline and aggressive leadership ability on a consistent basis. In the face of adversity, he was able to conduct timely and accurate reporting and maintain positive control of his team regardless of the situation.
During an engagement with enemy forces on Sept. 1, 2010, he showed exemplary courage under fire. He risked his life and disregarded his own safety by running from cover across an open field to the aid of a wounded Marine. He immediately pulled the casualty out of the exposed position to where he could quickly receive crucial medical attention. His actions resulted in the prevention of any further injuries to the Marine and possibly saved his life. His leadership under fire directly contributed to the overall success of Company G.
Flowers’ initiative, perseverance and total dedication to duty reflected credit upon him and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the U.S. Naval Service.
Flowers is a graduate of Flomaton High School and is the son of John E. Flowers of Atmore and Evelyn King of Mobile. He is the grandson of Rosetta Flowers and Earl King, both of Atmore.
Flowers and his wife, Alicia Flowers, reside in Tarawa Terrrace, N.C.
