Marty Hanks appointed Excel's new Principal

Excel’s new principal was approved by a 4-1 vote of the Monroe County Board of Education Tuesday morning in Monroeville during a special called board meeting.

Marty Hanks, a science teacher and assistant football and softball coach at Excel, received the support of board members Martha Jordan of Excel, Tony Powell of Uriah, Patsy Black of Monroeville and Richard Lett of Beatrice. Barbara Dean of Monroeville voted against the transfer.

Dean said she did not understand why the board was voting to approve a transfer instead of voting to hire Hanks as principal. She asked if the position was advertised.

Melanie Ryals, superintendent of the Monroe County Public School System, said the vacancy was advertised, interviews were held by the board and a special committee of Excel parents, teachers and support personnel. She said the committee recommended Hanks.

When asked if she knew how the committee voted, Jordan said she did, but she would not release that information to the public.
In addition, the board agreed to terminate several non-tenured teachers and approved the professional and support staffs, including internal and external transfers, for each school for the 2011-12 school term.

A list of each school’s professional and support staffs will be available next week
