Spanish Fort repeats as 5A baseball champs

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Even though they won last year's 5A baseball crown, the Spanish Fort Toros felt like they had something to prove going into this year's championship series against Cullman. After a two game sweep of the Bearcats, the Toros left no doubt about who 5A's best team was.

The Spanish Fort Toros celebrate with their second straight Class 5A baseball championship trophy on Friday.
Spanish Fort (36-8) mercy ruled Cullman 16-6 in six innings on Thursday, then capped the sweep with an 11-6 win on Friday.

"We came in with a big chip on our shoulder," Spanish Fort head coach Tommy Walker said. "I was calling all over the state trying to get stuff on Cullman, and I'm telling you there isn't a coach who gave us a chance to win this thing. Every article I read in the paper and everything I read I gave to our guys, and they played angry the whole time. I couldn't be more proud of them."

MVP Zac Fowler had a two-RBI double that started a seven-run outburst for the Toros in the fourth on Friday. He finished with two hits, four RBIs and two runs scored in the deciding game on his 18th birthday.

"I can't describe it," Fowler said. "We just won back-to-back state championships. I don't know how to describe it. Just walking off the field brought me to tears I was so happy. We had a great week of practice. We came in and everybody was just swinging the bats well and hitting the ball hard."

Rocky McCord (10-1) gave up six hits and five runs in 6 1/3 innings to get the win in the clincher.

"It is amazing, just being out there with all the guys, all the seniors, for our last game," McCord said. "Our friendship this year was much tighter than last year. We loved each other last year, but this year was special. Being out there with all the guys for our last game was just phenomenal."

Troy Brown pitched 2/3 of an inning to close out the game for Spanish Fort.

"I was a little wild and a little tired," McCord said. "I wanted to stay in, but I wanted to win the game more than I wanted to finish it myself."
