CHATOM, Ala. (AP) - Washington County officials say a Jackson teenager drowned during a swimming outing three days before he was to graduate from high school.
Sheriff Richard Stringer says the body of 18-year-old Darryl Ray Richardson Jr. was recovered about two hours after he went under at the lake at St. Stephens Historical Park, just west of the Tombigbee River.
Stringer says Richardson was to graduate from Jackson High School on Saturday.
Stringer, Richardson and four friends came to the lake Wednesday afternoon, and Richardson, who could not swim, saw 2 of his friends dive in the water before he decided to dive in as well.
Stringer said several parts of the lake, including where Richardson drowned, are at least 35 feet deep.
