All 5 members of Bullock County Commission arrested

UNION SPRINGS, Ala. — Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange says all five members of the Bullock County Commission have been arrested on felony charges of bid law violations.
Strange says a grand jury indicted the five on one count involving the expenditure of more than $15,000 for food for inmates at the county jail in Union Springs without taking competitive sealed bids. County Commission Chairman Ronald Smith was also charged with failure to report a possible ethics law violation.
A spokeswoman for the Bullock County Sheriff's Office says all five have been released on bond.
None of the commissioners could be reached immediately for comment at their commission offices.
Strange says the Examiners of Public Accounts found the commission spent at least $61,000 for supplies and $24,000 for food in fiscal 2009 without taking bids.
