Alabama Agriculture Department eyes pay cuts

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - - The state's new agriculture commissioner has already cut his staff by nearly one-fourth because of budget shortages, and pay cuts could be next for the remaining employees.
The state Personnel Board gave Commissioner John McMillan permission Wednesday to make across-the-board pay cuts of up to 7.5% to help avoid more layoffs. McMillan says he's hopeful he won't have to cut the pay, but he wants the tool available. He said any pay cuts would affect everyone, including him.
The Department of Agriculture and Industries had 391 employees when McMillan took office in January. He said he's had 74 layoffs, 20 retirements and two resignations. His department lost 15% of its budget, or $2.3 million, when the governor ordered across-the-board cuts in March
