(newsmax) - Religion is being driven out of U.S. culture, says former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who insists that he’s not happy about it. Europe started the trend with a “crisis of secularism” that created a “government-favored culture to replace Christianity,” Gingrich said at the National Catholic Prayer breakfast in Washington, Politico reports. Now that attitude has spread to the United States, Gingrich said. “The American elites are guided by their desire to emulate the European elites. And as a result, anti-religious values and principles are coming to dominate the academic, news media and judicial class in America,” he said. Gingrich specifically criticized the replacement of Anno Domini (AD) with the Common Era (CE) in many texts, the banning of school prayer, and the withdrawal of “one nation under God” from the Pledge of Allegiance.
