BAY MINETTE, Ala. — A Baldwin County Corrections Center officer was arrested late Wednesday on charges of falsifying records and giving false information to lawmen investigating the May 31 hanging death of inmate Zachary Lamar Barber, according to a press release from the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office.
Larry Bowen was arrested by the Atmore Police Department. He resigned his post the day after Barber was found hanging in his cell.
Barber, 19, of Fairhope, received a mental health evaluation in February. He was sent to Searcy after being charged with domestic violence-menacing, reckless endangerment, disorderly conduct, first-degree kidnapping, and first-degree robbery involving a machete.
His death launched a criminal and internal investigation which resulted in Bowen’s arrest.
Further details were not immediately available.
