Baldwin Co.'s New EMA Director Turns Down Job

(BALDWIN COUNTY, Ala.) - Baldwin County's new Emergency Management Agency director has turned down the job.

Karen Blackwood beat out over 70 other applicants from around the world for the postilion. She was selected Friday evening.

Blackwood notified the county Sunday evening of her decision, saying she didn't want to move her family to the Gulf Coast for a short-term contract.

Blackwood currently works as an emergency management officer for the U.S. Navy in Tennessee. She would have started her new job July 18.

In May, Alabama EMA said in a report that Baldwin County was lacking in several areas. It said the county did not have an up to date emergency operations plan and the county's state of readiness was not high.

Commissioners say they're looking for someone with experience handling the issues unique to the Gulf Coast.
