Tornadoes caused Alabama million of dollars in forestry losses

Downed trees in HooverFLORENCE, Alabama — Alabama's state forester says the tornadoes that struck Alabama late last month destroyed tens of thousands of acres of trees worth millions of dollars.
State forester Linda Casey says most of the trees are not suitable for sawing into lumber. She says some of the broken trees could be used as pulpwood.
Casey says that in addition to damaging the trees, forestland tornadoes create hazards for loggers. She says when a tornado causes trees to fall in a crisscross manner, it's dangerous for loggers to harvest them.
She says the Alabama Forestry Commission will work with federal agencies to secure disaster aid for landowners with forest land destroyed by the tornadoes. She also hopes to find money to help replant trees in urban areas.
