BAY MINETTE, Alabama -- A Baldwin County jury took less than 2 hours today to convict a Spanish Fort man on charges of first-degree rape and third-degree domestic violence-assault stemming from a 2009 incident, according to the Baldwin County District Attorney’s Office.
Circuit Judge Charles Partin in Bay Minette set June 10 as the sentencing date for 43-year-old Perris Sydney Jackson. Jurors found Jackson guilty of the attack on the woman, who is acquainted with him. The incident took place in November 2009, according to court documents.
Baldwin County District Attorney Hallie Dixon said in a news release that cases involving circumstances such as this case are rarely tried and even more rarely result in a conviction. “This is an accomplishment larger than the individual case, but so very important to the victim who had the courage to stand up,” she said.
Deputy Chief Assistant District Attorney Scott Taylor, who won the conviction, said the rape charge carries a possible sentence of 10 years to life in prison while the third-degree domestic violence could result in a sentence of up to 1 year.
Attempts to reach Jackson's attorney, Daniel P. Mitchell, for comment were unsuccessful.
