Facebook fight ends with Eastern Shore student injured

SPANISH FORT, Alabama — An Eastern Shore student reportedly suffered a broken jaw in an off-campus, after-hours fight spurred last week by an argument exchanged though the online social networking site Facebook, an official said Monday.
Baldwin County Public Schools spokesman Terry Wilhite said about a dozen students from Daphne and Spanish Fort high schools were involved in "a great deal of rhetoric" that erupted on the social networking site soon after spring break.
Daphne and Spanish Fort principals referred questions to Wilhite last week.
The spokesman said there was one fight "that took place off campus and not in school hours" wherein one student suffered "a facial injury believed to be a broken jaw." Wilhite did not identify the students involved. No police reports were filed and no arrests were made, said Wilhite, who could not confirm when the altercation occurred.
"Administrators have warned students to cease with the remarks that were getting other students upset," Wilhite said.
Wilhite said it appears tempers have cooled somewhat.
He said that teenagers are known to congregate in an area known as "the dirt pit" that is near the Spanish Fort High School entrance, "but it’s not school board property and police check that area frequently."
"We try to remind students that potential employers often check Facebook and other social media sites," and negative postings can impact job opportunities, Wilhite said.
