Alabama Senate votes to opt out of abortion coverage under federal health care law

MONTGOMERY, Alabama — The Alabama Senate has voted to opt out of allowing abortion coverage by any health insurance plan that participates in a health insurance exchange the state is supposed to set up under the federal health care law.
The bill by Republican Sen. Greg Reed of Jasper cleared the Senate 25-7 Tuesday and now goes to the House, where proponents say it has strong support.
The federal health care law allows states to opt out of allowing abortion coverage in their insurance exchanges, which would include those purchasing federally subsidized insurance and others. States are supposed to have the exchanges set up by 2014, or the federal government will provide them.
Reed said his bill shows Alabama is going to "stand for the unborn child."
