2 large earthquakes in Spain cause heavy damage

Two earthquakes have struck southeast Spain -- where officials say at least seven people are dead and dozens injured.
They report major damage to buildings.
The officials say the quakes had magnitudes of 4.4 and 5.2, and were close to the town of Lorca. The second came about two hours after the first.
Spanish state TV broadcast live images from the town, showing large chunks of stone and brick falling from the facade of a church.
A newspaper (El Pais) quotes one woman as saying her house split open with the quakes.
They occurred in a seismically active area near a large fault beneath the Mediterranean Sea. The US Geological Survey says it has recorded hundreds of small quakes in the area since 1990.
